Athletics Kenya (AK) has implemented several measures to combat age cheating in athletics. One of the key steps has been the introduction of document verification for athletes under the age of 20. This initiative aims to ensure that the athletes are competing within the appropriate age categories, addressing concerns over dishonest age declarations.
In addition, AK has partnered with national government agencies, including the Directorate of Registration of Births and the Immigration Department, to verify the authenticity of athletes’ birth records and passports. These collaborations have been crucial in confirming that athletes meet the required age criteria.
Currently, an investigation is underway to address instances of age cheating within the sport. Athletes found guilty of submitting fraudulent documents have had their paperwork confiscated for further investigation and potential disciplinary action.
As a result of the document verification process, cases of age cheating have significantly decreased. The fear of having falsified documents seized has acted as a strong deterrent, encouraging athletes to comply with the regulations and ensuring fair competition in athletics.
