The Athletics Kenya National U18 and U20 Trials entered its second and final day as South Rift’s Mirriam Chemutai Kibet dominated the women’s U18 3000m race at Nakuru’s Afraha Stadium, clocking a remarkable 9:08.05 in the opening event of the day.

The 16-year-old from Lemotit Athletics Camp in Kericho County showcased class and composure as she stepped up from her usual 1500m event to test herself over the longer distance, an experiment that paid off handsomely.

Her time not only secured a convincing win but also surpassed the qualifying standard for the upcoming 2025 CAA U20 Championships to be held in Lagos, Nigeria.

“I had planned myself well in preparation ahead of today’s trials,” said a jubilant Mirriam. “I decided to give it a try in the 3000m from my usual 1500m, and I’m happy to have won. I promise to represent Kenya well, and I thank my competitors for pushing me.”

Another standout closely followed Mirriam’s performance: Sheila Chepkemoi of Nala Track Club, who hails from Olenguruone, Kuresoi, Nakuru County. Sheila clocked 9:10.50, also comfortably inside the U20 qualifying mark of 9:30.00.

Both athletes’ times underscore their readiness to compete at the continental level, despite running in the U18 bracket.

“From last year’s ISF competition, I have been focusing on speed work, and the morale from my coach keeps pushing me forward,” said Sheila. “After this race, I plan to return to training, focusing on long runs and sharpening my speed.”

Judy Chepkemoi (South Rift) came in third in 9:12.33 making it a strong showing from the region. Fourth-place Joan Chepkirui also impressed, followed by Celestine Mumo from Central.

The tactical and fast-paced race set a high bar for the day’s events, and with two U18 athletes already hitting U20 qualifying standards, Athletics Kenya selectors have strong contenders to consider for the national team headed to Nigeria.

Afraha Stadium’s new tartan surface and crisp morning conditions offered a perfect stage for rising stars to shine. With distance running deeply rooted in Kenya’s culture, performances like these suggest the nation’s future in athletics is secure.
