Barnaba Korir says selected Kenyan team has undergone strict scrutiny
Strict Selection Process Implemented
Barnaba Korir says Athletics Kenya has intensified efforts to eliminate age cheating as preparations continue for the upcoming World Under-20 Championships.
Korir revealed that the national trials followed strict guidelines aimed at identifying genuine young talent from across the country.
“The World Under-20 trials followed strict selection rules, beginning with identifying standout athletes from the recent school games. Seventeen athletes selected are still in school, while eight are out of school,” he said.
According to Korir, Athletics Kenya worked closely with the immigration department and other relevants stakeholders to verify the athletes’ eligibility documents.
“We have worked closely with the immigration department and other stakeholders to tackle age cheating. The team we have picked is a clean one when it comes to the right age,” he added.
Federation Begins Deeper Vetting Process
Korir said the federation has now moved to a second phase of document verification ahead of visa applications for the United States, where the championships will be held.
“Having selected the team, we are now moving to the next stage of thoroughly verifying the athletes’ documents. With US visa requirements becoming tighter, we need to submit their applications on time,” he explained.
He further disclosed that officials accompanying the team will be announced later after undergoing proper vetting processes.
“The decision to announce officials accompanying Team Kenya at a later stage is meant to ensure everyone selected is properly vetted, including scrutiny of their social media activity,” he said.
Student Athletes to Remain in School
Korir noted that athletes still in school will continue learning until early July before reporting to residential camp.
“School-going athletes who qualified will remain in school until July 5, when they report to the residential training camp. During this period, the federation will closely monitor and follow their training programmes,” he said.
Athletics Kenya believes the measures will help safeguard the integrity of Kenyan athletics while preparing a competitive team for the global event.
